The Sista Gurl Mystique

Happy Hump Day Sista Gurls!

The power that lies within black women is astounding. We have been giving the unique tooling through ancestry, to make the impossible possible! So what does that mean for the SistaGurl blog? Well it was my greatest wish at the start of this blog to make sure my readers are empowered enough to take that energy back to our girls.

Black girls always need our support. They need to be triaged, before there is anything wrong, they need to see a narrative that speaks to who they are, and who they can potentially become. So finally, I had an AHA moment. At every event that I attended, I would always see a familiar face, an Evanston Township Alumni face. These women are dominating in every field, and they are the exact image that I believe our girls should see.

So as the wheels turned in my head, I wrote this letter to each of them:

As I send this message there is a black girl sitting at a desk at an Evanston school not completely sure if she has what it takes to be what she wants to be when she grows up. She’s searching for someone like YOU to inspire her, a mirrored image into her future. You could be the beacon to propel her into the confidence that she will need to keep moving forward. It's my hope, that someone she knows is a subscriber to the Sista Gurl Blog and will lead her to you. Someone that not only went to the schools she went to, but is beautiful, strong, and a rising talent. I've had the luxury of interviewing celebrities and as aspiring as they were, there’s something about a woman who isn't searching for fame and is an everyday hero. This year I pledged to highlight women of color in a series called “TheSistaGurlMystique” and as an Evanston Alum I believe you are perfect for it. I would love the opportunity to feature you in this series. It would cost you nothing but 10-15 minutes of your time as we discuss how you became the hero I see today. Additionally, I’d like to chat about your hope and vision for the future for yourself and for our girls.

We will schedule time for a Facebook Live video so all of our followers can continue to fortify you in your excellence.
If this message and offer interests you, please let me know as I would be honored to motivate our girls through you!

I am excited to announce the start of a new series! Beginning this Thursday, February 1st, at 9PM CST, I will be launching the SistaGurl Mystique. Staring, Pastor Jackie Newsome, JD, China Panion, Dr. Jazmine Daye-Dillard,DDS, Kudzai Mutasa, and Emmy winner, Lena Waithe.

What is the #SistaGurlMystique? One of my favorite marvel Super Villains is "Mystique" from X-Men. A few weeks ago, I wrote a post where I mentioned, "I was so busy being plain clothes Mystique covering my blue". Basically stating that at that particular time, I was shrouding my authenticity, to keep up appearances. Which in turn, held me back.

The ladies I named above the embodiment of Mystique being blue, WITHOUT APOLOGY. They've done away with the need to be someone else, and in my opinion, there are no better role models to have, than a group of black women, who are happily pursuing their dreams while being THEMSELVES.

I urge everyone reading this to follow me on Facebook at Laura Miller for the live interviews starting February 1st. If you have a little sister, niece, daughter, or cousin, grab her every Thursday Night at 9PM CST, (If it's too late, she can watch it over breakfast!), so she may be inspired.

Wishing you abundant love and light.

Eternally, your Capt SistaGurl
Laura Miller

We must rise like biscuits

The spirit woke me up at 4:30a this morning. The morning tune that blared in my mental subconscious sang, “We’re broken down and tired, living life like a merry-go-round.” I have to admit that I chuckled at the creator’s goal with this.   I promised to write back to my SG Peeps and I knew that there would be uncertainty today. Before I went to bed, having intentionally watched nothing regarding the election, I struggled with knowing what to say. Thankfully, as the saying goes, "he’s not here when you want him, he’s right on time."  My former pastor Rev. William Green has this sermon about a biscuit. At first listen, you’re thinking where is he going with this story?? He details how a biscuit is created, a little love and attention with the ingredients, then they’re combined and rolled or kneaded, cut into sections, or dropped. Then of course placed in the oven. He mentions all this for a few reasons, namely because there is a process before rising.  The biscuit havin...

Two years in, A lifetime out

Penned By Trinity Two years in, a lifetime out. About 3 years ago, a "Situationship" I had been in for 2 years ended in a whirlwind, just as quickly as it had started, and with LOTS of unanswered questions. I was deeply in love with a man I knew everything about, except for the fact that he had a girlfriend. Therefore making me the ignorant side chick. A position in life I had never set out to hold. When you live your life just going with the flow you find yourself in the middle of a shit storm with no umbrella. Initially, when I first met "He", there was something so common about him, something about him so incessantly ordinary that made him seem..different. Special almost. However, on the inside my intuition screamed, "S.T.U.P.I.D!!! DON'T DO IT! HE'S STUPID." I took that to mean we were soulmates and this was the man for me honey! My inner self, who I refer to as Trinity (me, myself, and I) shook her head as I closed my eyes and ears to all of ...
