The Sista Gurl Mystique

Happy Hump Day Sista Gurls! The power that lies within black women is astounding. We have been giving the unique tooling through ancestry, to make the impossible possible! So what does that mean for the SistaGurl blog? Well it was my greatest wish at the start of this blog to make sure my readers are empowered enough to take that energy back to our girls.  Black girls always need our support. They need to be triaged, before there is anything wrong, they need to see a narrative that speaks to who they are, and who they can potentially become. So finally, I had an AHA moment. At every event that I attended, I would always see a familiar face, an Evanston Township Alumni face. These women are dominating in every field, and they are the exact image that I believe our girls should see.  So as the wheels turned in my head, I wrote this letter to each of them:  As I send this message there is a black girl sitting at a desk at an Evanston school not completely sure if she has what it t

Reclaiming who YOU are!

Penned by J Nicole Growing up, I was never one of those kids that had a definitive answer to the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I would think of cool things, but then come up with a logical reason for why not. I could be a Vet, I like animals but they would be sick, injured, and well bloody...nope. An Astronaut! I don't like heights. At some point I came to the conclusion that when I grew up, “I want to be happy.” As an adult looking back at things at some point I probably should have defined what happiness would look like.  I did know, music was LIFE, it was Janet Jackson, TLC, and Aaliyah. I consumed music as much as possible, I started and ended my days with MTV, VH1, & BET. I had a TV with a built in VCR and a stockpile of VHS tapes each dedicated to my favorite artists and music videos. Twenty years later, I'm a graduate of Columbia College of Chicago with a B.A in Entrepreneurship concentration, Music Business. I also have my Master of

Stop Complaining in 2018!

I believe prior generations were so busy trying to get their just due that they didn’t have time to COMPLAIN ABOUT EVERYTHING. Publicly complain, privately complain, LABEL LABEL LABEL. By the way, if you’re reading this you’re probably thinking, well she’s complaining right now. YES I AM. ABOUT US. So it’s fine. I just really find it to be a complete waste of our time. Dope ass Eleanor Roosevelt once said” Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people . “. Let me clue you in on something that you think you know, but you have forgot about it.. CELEBRITIES ARE ACTUALLY PEOPLE; TWITTER, IG, AND FACEBOOK are filled with people. So.. by Mrs. Roosevelt's quote we have allowed intelligent people to become simple minded. Do you really care how fat Rhianna is?(MIND YOU SHE'S NOT FAT. Would it matter either way??)  Or is it just a distraction from the purpose of your life. Sometimes we can allow the simple annoyances in life to take us away f

Consumption vs. A Healthy Mind in 2018

It is a lot easier to blame others for every misstep and annoyance, hard time, or pitfall in your life. It’s actually a defaulted defense mechanism for most people. However, at a point in your life you should wake up and understand that if you continue to hear the same thing about yourself, than it’s a firm possibility that you are the problem. If we spent more time looking within and less time projecting; I firmly believe that the height of the negativity we experience in our lives would completely be reconstructed. When I say look within I don’t mean self loathe. That’s the construct of losers, I am saying actually dig in there to see how much of the things that are happening to you are within your control. How much FILTH do you ingest on your everyday life? How many nasty tv shows, social media posts, harmful people, GREASY FOOD, how much of this do you consume on a daily basis. (Google: you are what you eat, and birds of a feather) Another important thing to add is, the c
