The Black Freak

The Mary Jane Syndrome

The Mary Jane Syndrome
By Kesia King

Being labeled a "strong black woman" used to be a badge of honor.  A "strong black woman" takes on every battle life throws her way, while smiling with all thirty-two teeth, wearing 6 inch heels, a brief case on her shoulder, a baby bottle in her right hand a spatula in her left while on the phone listening to someone else's problems, when deep down she knows that she's actually the one that needs to be laying on somebody's couch, airing it all out!

It's funny because a couple weeks ago when I threw this particular outfit on, I was dealing with some internal struggles myself.  Now, add in my homemade, bone straight wig, red shoes and matching red clutch, when I looked in the mirror I immediately felt like Mary Jane Paul, from Being Mary Jane!  I can relate to Mary Jane, because on the outside, she always looks like she has it together. If you've watched the show on BET, you know when she walks into a room he…

Does Your Life Matter?

By Jamika B.
In my honest opinion the #BlackLivesMatter movement is reflected around fear and death. I support the heart behind the movement and will continue to be a voice for the youth and our black melanated people. However as a poet, I am an observer by nature and feel it's my civic duty to speak the truth. Let me post my disclaimer now before I go any further with my observations.
Disclaimer: WARNING! Jamika B. is known to speak her truths. That being said, her truths may not be your truths. Do not take anything she says personally. Please be reminded anything she says (no matter the passion behind her words) is all in love for the empowerment of black melanated people. Her views are far and wide. Crossing topics such as religion, spirituality, education, fashion, politics, world issues, black empowerment and more. Jamika B. is very passionate about her views and maybe against the norm. However, she speaks from the heart and means no disrespect. Be prepared to have an open m…

Why Donald Trump Continues to Win

Trump, The Village Idiot
By Laura Miller

All of the sane people in the world are scratching their heads trying to figure out why Donald Trump is ahead of all of the other Republican Presidential candidates in the polls. Here is the thing my good people, you all know you have an associate/friend, that's probably well off, that has a considerable amount of social disorders, AND diarrhea of the mouth? When they're out with you they're always good for a laugh, and they PAY FOR EVERYTHING.  Yes, this is Donald Trump. Captain Delusion, Senor Jerkface (Notice the Spanish there..) The guy you love to hate, but for Republicans, this seems to be the guy they want. Why? Because he's not a liar, he is a straight shooter and he's a millionaire (maybe billion, who cares). So of course this should be enough to run a country right? He doesn't believe in Planned Parenthood; he calls it an "abortion factory" , he wants to build a "giant" wall to stop illegal im…

What's Love Got To Do With It?!

What's Love Got To Do With It?  By Rapmusiq
When a guy says he loves you, he does not in fact LOVE you.  Well, let me rephrase that. He does not love you in the grand, impassioned, fairy tale princess way that you are envisioning in your mind.  It does not mean he will climb any mountain, cross any sea or slay a dragon for you. It doesn’t mean that he will tell you the truth, be there when you need him most or not have sex with another woman.  It simply means that he recognizes something special, unique and beautiful in your spirit that he aspires to be a part of for some undetermined amount of time, to some undetermined degree.
This can be extremely confusing, because up until this point when a guy (boy or man) says he loves you for the first time, the type of love you’ve been most familiar with is the love of your parents (hopefully).  This of course is assuming that you have had a healthy, functional and nurturing relationship with your parents. This doesn’t mean that they or (one…

Can We Be Your Sistas?

My mom  has a best friend, that she has had my whole life and most of hers (I think the count is, over 50 years now). Every week, they share their stories with each other either on the phone or in person. They can talk on the phone every day, and yet, each time, it would seem like, they hadn't spoken in years.

You could even feel the love in their voice messages, "Hey Ging, it's me G!", or " Hey Sista Gurl, it's me!" The love that they share for each other runs DEEP. They're soul mates. They're Sistas. The kind that are not blood related, the type of sister that is chosen. They lean on each other when times are rough, they celebrate in each others joy, it is the most perfect love.

Studies have proven that women live longer, and one of those reasons is because we allow ourselves the opportunity to vent, and share our frustrations to our friends. By doing so, the slums of every day life don't kill us (Look it up, it's a fact)!

Some of you…
