Mediocre Month for Hip-Hop? Part 1: G.O.O.D Music

A mediocre Black Music Month

In recent years we have gotten so used to being inundated by content that we rarely notice if the product is worth our time. I've found that this month has showed us just how much our favorite artists expect our loyalty, but don't always give us quality in return. This month was set to be one of the biggest months in Hip-Hop and I was left underwhelmed by mediocrity and HASTE.

First mistake music lovers made prior to the start of music month, was allowing Kanye to bait us on Twitter and TMZ with MAGA hats and deplorable slavery comments. That was followed by the anti-climatic Pusha-T and Drake beef that started the month.

More importantly, the media as well as fans were more concerned with Drake's secret baby. Seemingly far less baffled with the fact that everyone aligned to G.O.O.D music was releasing 25 minute EP's.

Social media allowed us to get the inside scoop on the listening parties, and tune in to the brief press tour from Pusha-T as he released image damaging content. Social media did a horrible job with the coverage on this album. The music community just quickly forgave or ignored Whitney's drug littered bathroom that Kanye paid over 60k to use as Pusha's cover.

As a SUPER STAN for Whitney I listened to the album holding my nausea. We no longer care about the families of dead legends when C.E.O's and President/Artists aren't creative enough to come up with something else huh?

Despite the distastefulness. The album in true King Push fashion was well done. "I'm top five and all them N#$AS Dylan"! So well done that all the media addressed was ONE TRACK about another artists who we'll be discussing on part two.  An echoing of microwave timer seeped throughout the week, it was time for another album.

Kanye's album cover was rushed/underwhelming, not very creative, (just fill in a dissatisfied adjective in here) the production was Kanye's so, that was cool. Still even that was so so.

Mathematically this is how it went. Friday album's album comes out, you listen to it 3 times consecutively, you may come back to it on Monday on the way to work, read a few reviews about the wack album. Go over it with your friends on social for a few days, by then you're welcoming the next one.

That was Kid Cudi and Ye's Joint Album Kid's See Ghosts. Honestly I don't even remember it. That was ALL THE WAY on June 8th. See what I did there? Production was still good. Kid Cudi's angst was refreshing because we hadn't heard it in a while. However, since we haven't heard him in a while and he and Ye's Joint album had been in the works for years, one would think it would be longer. This album was the one that should have been more like a G.O.O.D music compilation with maybe let's say 3 or 4 more tracks. CLASSIC. The microwave beeps again.

JUNE 15TH the day that I had anticipated for 6 weeks. I stayed up late on the 14th so at midnight to hear the GOD SON over Kanye tracks. Believing that Kanye would stir all his idealistic creative energy into a lyrical titan and finally FEED THE CULTURE. So.. at midnight it wasn't available. I woke up in the morning on my way to work I checked again. Still wasn't there. Luckily I was able to get a link to the album listening party on YouTube, but I prefer studio quality. JUNE 16th I was able to finally  hear it.

When the first track started and Diddy was HOLLERING all over the tracks I was ECSTATIC. Track 2 Dope, Track 3 Nice. I was getting more excited and discouraged because I knew it would be ending soon. Track 4 beautiful. But did The Dream and Ye hi jack the song 5 and 6? Track 7 meh..BEEP BEEP BEEP.

I should note that there are 3 albums LEFT to review. Part 2 Post coming soon.

When only the Sistas are CANCELED!

New Blogger Alert!!! This post was submitted by the ever talented Seirra Pepin! *****
Drake’s Nice For What dropped just in time to be mine, and plenty of women’s Summer ‘18 anthem. What a thoughtful king. @Defend_Brooklyn said it best, the video has the Infinity Stones of Black women. But Aubrey’s female empowerment jam doesn’t exempt him from flaw.
Like many other rappers, he uses expletives to describe women. He’s belittled Kid Cudi’s mental health. Nevertheless, our problematic fave has yet to be canceled. Neither has Kanye West after his slavery comments, not really.

This isn’t about our Canadian Prince or Chicago’s troubled son. It’s about Black women and the nuance and forgiveness we deny them. Start the cancellation parades organized by forward-thinking millennials (like myself) that aim to diminish the platforms of Cardi B, Chrisette Michelle, Azealia Banks, Tina Campbell, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Think about how swift, and in some of these cases, impactful, backlash has be…

MUST READ: How to Emotionally Validate Children/Teens

Guess Post Alert!!! Many of you who follow us may remember that we interviewed health therapist, and "Dating With Dev" Site Creator Devon Estes, and it was BRILLIANT. She's been so gracious to share her expertise on an article that most parents and mentors will benefit from! Show her some love! ~ Capt SistaGurl

By Devon Estes M.S.,LPC

As a mental health therapist for teens and their families I find myself teaching emotional validation a lot. For the teens I spend much of their treatment expanding their emotional vocabulary, guiding them into identifying their emotions, helping them identify their needs associated with their emotions, and supporting them into acting on those needs in a healthy productive manner. For their parents, I’m often highlighting the connection between validation/invalidation and the issues they experience with the child, as well as how to help support the child navigate self-validation.  I also find myself debunking the myth that validation is ag…

YOU ONLY GET ONE VAGINA

I think it's especially important that when something is on my mind, I share it with my SG readers. Yall are my girls and therefore we must be able to have those conversations that aren't always popular for the betterment of womanhood. Your vagina, can be compared to no other vagina, it was carefully crafted just for your in divine splendor.  It's special. You are special. Here's the part that we so often forget and rarely point out though. As special as your Kitty Love Blossom is, it's only special to you! Literally just you.

Sometimes you may go to the ob/gyne and the physician will tell you how beautiful it is, and how firm your cervix is, but that's because they value those types of things. In real life. It's apart of their job.

Laura, why are…
